I was SO excited when I found out my hubs was playing some gigs in Mexico over Halloween weekend. Mexico has always been one of my favorite places to visit (I’ve been trying to figure out how to get early retirement in Tulum for longer than I’ve been in the workforce!!)! From the warmth of its people and the richness of its culture to the colorful landscapes and of course… the most amazing food EVER (tacos! tacos! tacos!), Mexico is Mexamazing!! I’ve been to the Yucatan/Riviera Maya region a number of times, but never to Mexico City or some of the other amazing towns inland… I jumped at the chance to spend my favorite holiday weekend celebrating Dia de los Muertos rather than playing dress-up in one of my typical subversive costumes that require 30 minutes of explanation before people get it 🙂
So how do you pack for transitional weather (60s and 70s during the day, 50s at night), manage to look stylish, not repeat an outfit and fit it all in a carry-on with a 12 lb camera + lens?! You make your husband pack half your stuff in his bag, hehe! No but really, I thought the best way to pack would be take at least one colorful dress, a leather jacket, a couple easy-to-layer with maxis, a cute embroidered something (I chose this awesome jacket/swing top from Zara!), my favorite comfy vintage Topshop jeans and OBVIOUSLY my fedora!
Well, Mexico City (“the D.F.”) was just as cool as everyone had ever said it was! I only wish we’d had more time to explore… We stayed at the serene, colonial style hip Hotel Condesa DF with its gorgeous design aesthetic and super sweet rooftop! This was the perfect spot to see as much of the D.F. as possible in a short time – easy stroll to the Roma neighborhoods and Condesa. I started our trip in my bright orange-red dress + black strong-shoulder leather jacket as an homage to Halloween, and quickly realized no dress was colorful enough to stand out against the beautiful backdrop of this city! The next day, I wore something a bit more inspired by local styles – this gorgeous embroidered swing top from Zara (also comes in white!) with my fave pair of vintage Baxter jeans from Topshop.
Travel tips: grab a coffee from the cute Chiquitito Cafe on the border of Condesa and Roma | yummy baked goods, sandwiches and fresh fruit smoothies from the super cool design-y Abarrotes Delirio D.F. in Roma | quality street style tacos at El Faraon in Roma (can they please start delivering to the U.S.?!)
