NEW ZEALAND: BETTER THAN OLD ZEALAND! (Part 1 of 3: Queenstown)

I recently returned from the trip of a LIFETIME with my hubs to the most magical land on (middle) earth: Lord of the Rings Land, AKA New Zealand’s South Island! OH. MY. GOD. It’s like being in a real-life screensaver or movie set! Every single square meter of this country is breathtaking, filled with lush, verdant rolling hills, turquoise waters and meteoric volcanic mountains with waterfalls gushing unexpectedly at every turn along its winding one-lane roads… Where the water flows from glaciers atop mountains and has a turquoise blue color enriched from mineral deposits that is truly indescribable! I have dreamed of going here for nearly a decade, ever since I became obsessed with Flight of the Conchords 🙂 I even learned how to do a Kiwi accent over the years, and couldn’t wait to go practice in real life kiwi-land! I’ve dreamed of cruising through Milford Sound under sunny skies and dipping my feet in the alpine lakes of the Southern Lakes region for years and years… My husband is from Australia and had already been to New Zealand several times and never felt the urge to visit during our trips to visit his family and friends in Oz… Still, each time we visited his home in the land down under, I made him promise to take me to their friendly neighbors in the land down underer! After many trips to the magical land of Oz, he was finally bitten by the kiwi travel bug as well and we doubled our pleasure with a trip to both of the southernmost lands on earth! As you can imagine, packing was a breeze [insert Lucille Bluth eyeroll here!]!

THE ART OF LAYERING: TIS THE SEASON!

Spring and autumn are truly magical seasons! However, they’re a bit like a two-faced friend: sweet, lovely and temperate in the light of day and then a bit colder and unpredictable when the sun sets below the horizon! How do you dress for this schizophrenic weather without having to go home and change 3x a day? Beyond my favorite, transitional weather-wear items like blazers and leather jackets, a chunky cardigan or lightweight sweater layered over tanks, tees and dresses can look great and take you seamlessly from day through night! Keep reading below to see three different ways I layer the same outfit for a day-to-night look (PS: it helps to have amaaaazing girlfriends around who will help you layer and de-layer throughout the day, helping you hold those precious knits or scarves! 🙂 OR carry a pair of heels in your bag if you plan on going out at night and want to jazz it up!)

MELBOURNE CAFE SCENE: WHY AUSSIES RULE COFFEE

Australia is known for many things – kangaroos, koalas, killer crocs, surfers and Aussie Rules football (“footy”)! But now the rest of the world is finally catching the buzz where Aussies truly rule! My favorite “comedic folk duo” Flight of the Conchords once jokingly said this about Australians: “They’re always moving from city to city, in search of the perfect wave”. While that may be true, I believe they’re always moving from cafe to cafe, in search of the perfect third wave coffee! 🙂 The Australian third wave coffee phenomenon is rapidly sweeping across the US and parts of Europe, and while many are becoming familiar with the source of their single origin beans, most people don’t realize the source of their strong flat whites is the state of Victoria in southeastern Australia! Not only do these Aussies know how to roast their beans to perfection and design the most aesthetically pleasing cafes, but even their chain coffeeshops and local neighborhood pubs can create the most delectable and artful lattes and cappuccinos (aka flat white or magic for you Melban folk)! Keep reading below to find some of my favorite spots in and around Melbourne (from whence my husband hails) to sip on a strong flat white (double ristretto cappuccino equivalent) or magic (this is a Melbourne-specific, slightly shorter version of a strong flat white, similar to a cortado or gibraltar in the US/EU)!
